Reduced low voltage
A site supply arrangement that lowers the available to a person touching one live conductor and earth. A common 110 V centre-tapped has an earthed midpoint, leaving about 55 V from either line to earth. Contact between both lines can still expose someone to 110 V, so damaged tools remain unsafe.
Using Reduced low voltage in context
Updated
A distinction worth remembering
Reduced low voltage reduces particular shock risks; it does not eliminate the need for sound equipment and safe working. Compare voltage to earth with voltage between conductors when explaining a centre-tapped supply.
Questions to take further
- How can I revise Reduced low voltage beyond the definition?
- Explain what Reduced low voltage describes, compare it with a related term and use it in a topic question. State any assumptions and what evidence you would need before applying the idea to real work.

A device that transfers electrical energy between windings through a changing magnetic field. It can raise or lower AC voltage according to the winding arrangement, with losses meaning output power is below input power. A site centre-tapped transformer also changes how its output is referenced to earth.

Read the Transformer entryVoltage
Voltage is the electrical potential difference between two points, measured in volts (V). It describes energy transferred per unit of charge, rather than how much charge is flowing. A battery can have voltage across its terminals even when no complete circuit exists and no current flows. Voltage and current are different quantities.
Read the Voltage entrySafe isolation
The procedure that proves a circuit dead before anyone works on it. Prove the voltage indicator against a known source, isolate the circuit, secure the isolation with your own lock and tag, prove the point of work dead across all conductor combinations, then prove the indicator again. The final step is the one that catches a tester that died mid-job.
