Will AI take electricians’ jobs?

Short answer: not the way it is changing desk work — because the job is standing in someone’s loft with a cable in your hand, and signing your name to what you did. Long answer below, including the parts of the trade that are changing.

Why this work is hard to automate

Four properties of the work. None of them is a forecast — each is a statement about how the job is done today, checkable by anyone who has watched one being done.

    The work is physical, and it is where the building is

    Someone has to get into the loft, pull the cable through the joist, terminate it in the board and stand there while the RCD trips. Nothing about that step happens on a laptop, and moving it off site is not a software problem — it is a robotics and access problem, in a different unfinished building every week.

    No two installations are the same

    A 1930s semi with a rewire half-finished by the last owner, a barn conversion, a flat above a shop with a supply nobody has drawn since 1978. The job is mostly reading a situation that is not documented anywhere and deciding what it needs. That is the part that resists a procedure, and it is the part experience buys.

    A named person signs for it

    Electrical installation work in the UK is certified by a person, who is accountable for what they signed. That accountability is not a formality that could be reassigned to a tool — it is the whole basis on which the work is trusted, insured and inspected.

    It is regulated, and the regulations keep moving

    Work has to meet BS 7671, which is amended; some domestic work is notifiable under Part P; the competence and card schemes sit on top of that. A trade with a regulatory floor and an inspection regime is a trade where 'good enough, quickly' is not a business model.

What AI does change

The other half of the argument, given the same space — because a page that only lists its own supporting points is an advert.

  • The desk half of the job is changing fast

    Quoting, take-offs, scheduling, certificates, chasing invoices, writing up an EICR — that is a real share of a self-employed spark's week, and it is exactly the kind of work software has been eating for a decade. Expect the admin to shrink, not the wiring.

  • Diagnosis is getting assistance, not replacement

    Better instruments, better logging, better pattern-matching on fault data. That changes how quickly you find a fault. It does not change who is standing at the board with the leads in their hands, or who is responsible for what they then do about it.

  • Demand is an economy question, not an AI question

    How much electrical work exists in five years depends on housing, grid work, heat pumps, EV charging and interest rates. We have no way to forecast that, so we do not. Anyone selling you a trade on a demand projection is selling you a guess with a chart on it.

  • "AI-proof" is a shape, not a promise

    The honest version of the claim is narrow: this work is harder to automate than a job done entirely on a screen, for the four structural reasons above. That is worth knowing when you are choosing. It is not a guarantee about your career, and we are not going to pretend it is one.

The knowledge does go out of date

The trade moves — it just moves toward more work rather than less of it.

EV charging, heat pumps, solar and battery storage have all gone from niche to routine inside a decade, and the wiring regulations were amended to follow them. Someone who qualified in 2010 and stopped reading is not current today. The durable thing is the trade; the perishable thing is what you know about it.

Common questions

Will AI replace electricians?
Not in the way it is changing desk work. The physical installation and the on-site judgement are the job, and both happen in a different unfinished building every week. What is changing is the paperwork around the work — quoting, certificates, scheduling — and the instruments that help you find a fault.
Is a trade a safe bet, then?
It is a job that is hard to do remotely and hard to automate, which is a real and unusual property. It is not a guarantee. How much work exists depends on the economy, housing and grid investment, and we do not forecast any of those.
What about robots doing installation work?
The obstacle is not intelligence, it is access and variation: lofts, floor voids, occupied houses, part-built sites, and no two the same. That is a much harder problem than reasoning about a circuit, and it is not close to being solved.
Does that mean the trade never changes?
The opposite. EV charging, heat pumps, battery storage and solar have all gone from niche to routine inside a decade, and the wiring regulations have been amended to follow them. The work is durable; the specific knowledge is not, which is why staying current to the latest amendment matters.
