Gas Safe Register
The register of gas businesses approved to do gas work in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the engineers who work for them.
In Great Britain, regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 says employers and the self-employed doing gas work must belong to the class of persons HSE approves. That class is the Gas Safe Register. Northern Ireland's 2004 Regulations set the matching duty there.
Each registered engineer carries an ID card showing their photo, licence number and the kinds of gas work they are registered for. You can check an engineer on the register before work starts.
Registration is a separate duty from competence: anyone who works on a gas fitting must be competent, whether or not they are paid.
