An electrical energy storage system sits inside what the regulations call a prosumer's low-voltage installation — a building that both consumes and produces electricity. The consequence is immediate and easy to underestimate: switching off at the main switch no longer makes the installation dead, because there is a charged battery on the other side of the inverter.
That drives most of the requirements. Direct-current arcs do not self-extinguish the way alternating current does, and a lithium battery in thermal runaway supplies its own oxygen — neither behaves like a fault you have met on a final circuit.
The rest is ordinary engineering applied to unfamiliar equipment: protection on the d.c. side, and bonding of the enclosure, siting and ventilation, and selection that accounts for an inverter capable of producing smooth d.c. residual current. Commissioning paperwork matters more here than almost anywhere, because the next person needs to know the battery exists.
