Tiling apprenticeships and college routes
An apprenticeship means earning while you learn: you work for a tiling firm and train at the same time. Here's how it works in each nation, plus the college route if an apprenticeship isn't for you.
Our wall and floor tiling path is in public beta: some lessons are still being checked.
England
Wall and floor tiler (ST0368)
England's tiling apprenticeship is at Level 2. You learn backgrounds, setting out, fixing and grouting on real jobs, train with a provider, and finish with an end-point assessment.
Foundation apprenticeship
A finishing trades foundation apprenticeship at Level 2 is a first step for 16 to 21 year olds (and some 22 to 24 year olds). It asks for no particular qualifications.
Pay and hours
Apprentices are paid at least the apprentice minimum wage, and many employers pay more.
Finding one
Search GOV.UK's apprenticeship service, and ask local tiling and bathroom firms directly: small firms don't always advertise.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Scotland
The Modern Apprenticeship in Construction: Building runs at SCQF levels 5 and 6, and wall and floor tiling is one of its options. Apprenticeships.scot lists vacancies.
Wales
Careers Wales explains how apprenticeships work in Wales and lists vacancies there.
Northern Ireland
ApprenticeshipsNI is the programme in Northern Ireland. Ask local colleges which tiling routes they run.

Diplomas
City & Guilds' Diplomas in Wall and Floor Tiling (6710) come at Level 1 and Level 2, and other awarding bodies run tiling courses too. College is classroom and workshop: you'll still need site experience.
Before you sign up
Ask how much time you'll spend actually tiling, whether the course helps you find work experience, and what qualification you leave with.
