Maintenance and Environmental Protection
Rainwater, Maintenance and Environmental Protection · Plumbing
Good plumbing work carries on after the last joint is made. This topic covers the checks that prevent damage, what the customer is left with, and where water and waste go afterwards.
A stop valve that turns, lagged pipes in cold spaces and a drained outside tap prevent most winter damage. A frozen pipe is thawed gently from the tap end, never with a flame.
At handover the customer learns where the valves are and keeps the maker's instructions. Unvented cylinders are serviced by a competent installer, and a gas boiler service is booked with a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Many outside drains run untreated to rivers, so drained heating water goes to the foul drain. In England, Wales and Scotland, the duty of care means job waste goes only to an authorised carrier or site, with a written description.

How to reason about the system
Before draining a system or clearing a job, ask where the water and the waste will go. Dirty water belongs in the foul drain, and job waste goes only to an authorised carrier or site, with a written description.
Questions to take further
- Can I take my own job waste to the tip in my van?
- In England a business carrying waste, even its own, needs to register as a waste carrier, and the site must be authorised to take it. A householder's own rubbish is treated differently.

Terms to know
Before you start: some plumbing work is regulated or notifiable
Some water fittings work needs notice to, and consent from, the water supplier before it starts. Check the rules where you live.
Gas work is for competent workers covered by a Gas Safe registered business in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate gas regulations. Do not work on gas pipes or appliances yourself.
In England, installing an unvented hot-water system over 15 litres is notifiable building work: use a competent installer registered with a competent-person scheme, or tell building control before work starts. Leave this work to a suitably skilled person.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own water and building rules; check which apply before work starts. Electrical connections belong with an electrician.
This guide does not qualify you or make you competent, approved or registered for plumbing, gas or unvented work.
