Multifunction tester

An installation tester that combines several measurements in one instrument, commonly continuity, , loop and tests. It saves carrying separate meters, but each function still needs the correct leads, range, setup and safe test sequence. It does not replace a dedicated for proving dead.

Using Multifunction tester in context

Updated

A distinction worth remembering

A multifunction tester combines measurements with different purposes. Selecting a function does not establish that the circuit is in a safe condition for that test.

Questions to take further

How can I revise Multifunction tester beyond the definition?
Explain what Multifunction tester describes, compare it with a related term and use it in a topic question. State any assumptions and what evidence you would need before applying the idea to real work.

A two-pole instrument used to check for voltage between conductors during safe isolation. The user checks it on a known live source or proving unit before and after testing the circuit. A suitable indicator and sound probes matter because a false dead reading can expose someone to live parts.

Voltage indicator

A two-pole instrument used to check for voltage between conductors during safe isolation. The user checks it on a known live source or proving unit before and after testing the circuit. A suitable indicator and sound probes matter because a false dead reading can expose someone to live parts.

Insulation resistance

A measure of how strongly insulation opposes current between parts intended to be electrically separated, usually expressed in megohms. An insulation-resistance instrument applies a DC test voltage. Connected electronics, moisture and contamination can affect the method or reading; an unexpected result needs investigation. A single satisfactory result does not establish every aspect of an installation's safety.

Zs — Earth Fault Loop Impedance

The total impedance of the earth-fault-current loop at a point in an installation, including the supply and the installation's fault-return path. For many circuits, Ze plus R1+R2 is a useful approximation, with conductor temperature and measurement conditions taken into account. The result must be assessed against the actual protective arrangement and required disconnection conditions.
