Test leads

The insulated leads and probes that connect a test instrument to a circuit. Their condition, ratings and exposed tip length matter because the operator may be close to live parts. Before a measurement, the instrument and leads must suit the task; during , the is checked before and after the dead test.

Using Test leads in context

Updated

A distinction worth remembering

Lead and probe ratings must suit the measurement and environment along with the instrument. Inspect the accessories as well as the meter body.

Questions to take further

How can I revise Test leads beyond the definition?
Explain what Test leads describes, compare it with a related term and use it in a topic question. State any assumptions and what evidence you would need before applying the idea to real work.

HSE guidance on electrical test equipment used on low-voltage systems. It covers choosing and maintaining suitable instruments, probes and leads, including insulation, finger barriers and limiting exposed metal. Describing equipment as GS38-compliant is not a guarantee about its condition or use: the whole test arrangement and working method must suit the task.

GS38

HSE guidance on electrical test equipment used on low-voltage systems. It covers choosing and maintaining suitable instruments, probes and leads, including insulation, finger barriers and limiting exposed metal. Describing equipment as GS38-compliant is not a guarantee about its condition or use: the whole test arrangement and working method must suit the task.

Voltage indicator

A two-pole instrument used to check for voltage between conductors during safe isolation. The user checks it on a known live source or proving unit before and after testing the circuit. A suitable indicator and sound probes matter because a false dead reading can expose someone to live parts.

Multifunction tester

An installation tester that combines several measurements in one instrument, commonly continuity, insulation resistance, loop impedance and RCD tests. It saves carrying separate meters, but each function still needs the correct leads, range, setup and safe test sequence. It does not replace a dedicated voltage indicator for proving dead.
