Meet the plumbing trade and routes in
Plumbing Basics · Plumbing
A route into plumbing needs a connection to real work, not just a course title.
Compare the practical experience, assessment and employment opportunities behind each training offer. England’s ST0303 apprenticeship sits alongside different apprenticeship arrangements in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
College study can be a useful beginning. Ask what follows it, who supervises the practical work and how the relevant occupational skills are assessed. A learning path on this site grants no professional registration.

How to reason about the system
A provider should explain entry requirements, practical training, assessment and the route into employment. Compare programmes within the nation where you intend to work, and ask how prior learning and supervised experience are handled.
Questions to take further
- Does a college diploma automatically establish every trade competence?
- No. The award describes assessed learning within its scope. Real employment, further assessment and specialist registration can have separate requirements.

Terms to know
Before you start: some plumbing work is regulated or notifiable
Some water fittings work needs notice to, and consent from, the water supplier before it starts. Check the rules where you live.
Gas work is for competent workers covered by a Gas Safe registered business in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate gas regulations. Do not work on gas pipes or appliances yourself.
In England, installing an unvented hot-water system over 15 litres is notifiable building work: use a competent installer registered with a competent-person scheme, or tell building control before work starts. Leave this work to a suitably skilled person.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own water and building rules; check which apply before work starts. Electrical connections belong with an electrician.
This guide does not qualify you or make you competent, approved or registered for plumbing, gas or unvented work.
