What plumbers need to know about electrics
Safe Working · Plumbing
Water services can sit beside dangerous electrical faults and protective connections.
Before disturbing pipework, understand whether the proposed change affects bonding or equipment that needs electrical isolation. Recognition is a reason to coordinate with someone competent, not permission to improvise wiring.
Part P covers domestic electrical safety in England and Wales; Wales has a wider notification scope. A competent-person scheme electrician handles certification and notification for their registered work. The other main option is for the householder to notify building control before starting. Registered third-party certification is an additional England route, agreed in advance. Scotland and Northern Ireland use separate national arrangements.

How to reason about the system
Bonding and isolation affect the safety of nearby pipework. An appliance control being off is not evidence that all electrical sources have been removed. Establish who is competent for the electrical work and what their handover actually covers.
Questions to take further
- Does a plumbing qualification make all heating-control wiring appropriate work?
- No. Electrical knowledge, practical competence and the relevant building-compliance arrangements must be established separately for the task.

Terms to know
Before you start: some plumbing work is regulated or notifiable
Some water fittings work needs notice to, and consent from, the water supplier before it starts. Check the rules where you live.
Gas work is for competent workers covered by a Gas Safe registered business in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate gas regulations. Do not work on gas pipes or appliances yourself.
In England, installing an unvented hot-water system over 15 litres is notifiable building work: use a competent installer registered with a competent-person scheme, or tell building control before work starts. Leave this work to a suitably skilled person.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own water and building rules; check which apply before work starts. Electrical connections belong with an electrician.
This guide does not qualify you or make you competent, approved or registered for plumbing, gas or unvented work.
