Gas work and the law
Safe Working · Plumbing
Water-plumbing experience is not evidence that someone can undertake a gas task.
For work involving gas in Great Britain, choose a Gas Safe registered engineer with the relevant categories. Northern Ireland also uses the Gas Safe register, under its separate 2004 installation-and-use regulations.
A short awareness unit explains the handover boundary and danger signs. A suspected escape or carbon monoxide concern takes priority over finishing a water repair; reach safety and contact the appropriate emergency service. The planned gas trade will cover further work knowledge.

How to reason about the system
Gas competence and registration are separate from general water-plumbing experience. The registration details and listed work categories should fit the appliance and activity. Northern Ireland’s use of Gas Safe sits within its own 2004 installation-and-use regulations.
Questions to take further
- What should a plumber do when a water job would disturb a gas connection?
- Leave the connection undisturbed and arrange the appropriately registered gas specialist. In Great Britain and Northern Ireland, choose a Gas Safe registered engineer for that work.

Before you start: some plumbing work is regulated or notifiable
Some water fittings work needs notice to, and consent from, the water supplier before it starts. Check the rules where you live.
Gas work is for competent workers covered by a Gas Safe registered business in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate gas regulations. Do not work on gas pipes or appliances yourself.
In England, installing an unvented hot-water system over 15 litres is notifiable building work: use a competent installer registered with a competent-person scheme, or tell building control before work starts. Leave this work to a suitably skilled person.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own water and building rules; check which apply before work starts. Electrical connections belong with an electrician.
This guide does not qualify you or make you competent, approved or registered for plumbing, gas or unvented work.
