The AM2 assessment: what to expect

Career Taster · Free course section with an account

The family assesses practical occupational skills through the applicable assessment route. NET describes AM2S for the installation and maintenance apprenticeship and AM2D for the domestic apprenticeship. The exact version, entry arrangements and assessment instructions must be confirmed with the training provider and assessment centre.

Our Section 0 readiness unit introduces the assessment’s broad working habits in original words. It uses safe-isolation, testing and fault-finding practice to connect written learning with supervised practical preparation. It does not reproduce NET assessment tasks or marking material.

Installing to a drawing means interpreting the specification and checking the actual result. Testing needs a logical sequence and reliable records. Fault finding starts from evidence and safe conditions, not from changing parts until something works.

Completing these lessons does not pass an , establish occupational competence or award an apprenticeship qualification. Use the unit alongside the practical training and centre guidance required for your route.

Confirm your assessment route with NET’s AM2S information and your centre.

What to understand before practising

Assessment arrangements can change as apprenticeship standards change. Ask the provider and centre which route and version apply to you before relying on a timetable or preparation checklist.

A practical assessment within specified electrical qualification routes. NET identifies AM2 as the final assessment for C&G 2357 and EAL 1605 NVQs; AM2S, including AM2S v1, serves England's installation and maintenance electrician apprenticeship standard. AM2E, including its v1 version, serves the experienced-worker route after the required qualification. The route and registration date determine the version. This app provides none of these assessments.

  • Safe isolation

The procedure that proves a circuit dead before anyone works on it. Prove the voltage indicator against a known source, isolate the circuit, secure the isolation with your own lock and tag, prove the point of work dead across all conductor combinations, then prove the indicator again. The final step is the one that catches a tester that died mid-job.
