Smart, safe and low-carbon homes
Installation · Full course section in Plus
A modern home can combine EV charging, PV generation, battery storage, heat pumps, data wiring and controls. Each technology has its own function, but their interfaces change demand, sources, protection and the information needed for safe work.
The planned low-carbon electrical course will explore those specialist interfaces in more depth. It is not yet available for enrolment. The existing Installation section contains one short teaser that introduces the systems and points here for the intended course scope.
Useful preparation is already available in the electrical foundations: source identification, , circuit protection, electrical science and the environmental-technologies unit. A smart controller does not remove the need for the appropriate electrical design or specialist competence.
Alarm systems add a different safety function. Their requirements depend on the home and the relevant nation and tenure. A phone notification is not a replacement for the required detection and warning arrangement.

What to understand before practising
The current teaser names the interfaces between sources, loads, controls and protection. The specialist course is planned and has no enrolment offer yet. Existing electrical foundations remain useful preparation.

Common questions
- Can I try Smart, safe and low-carbon homes free on this page?
- This guide is free to read, but there is no public quiz specifically for this topic on this page. Browse public practice samples for other subjects, or create an account for the learning path. The full course section requires Plus.
- Can I start the specialist low-carbon electrical course now?
- No. It is planned. The live electrical path has a single awareness teaser and relevant foundation lessons; this page describes the intended future scope.
- Does a smart control remove the need for electrical safety checks?
- No. Controls can change operation, but protection, source identification and safe work still need the appropriate assessment.

Electrical energy
Electrical energy is the amount transferred over time, measured in joules (J) or, on electricity bills, kilowatt-hours (kWh). A load drawing a steady 1 kW for two hours uses 2 kWh. Power describes the rate of transfer; energy describes the accumulated amount. A battery capacity quoted in kWh is therefore different from its power rating in kW.

The assessed greatest simultaneous demand of an installation or part of it. Connected loads, their operating patterns and justified diversity allowances inform the assessment. It helps determine supply and distribution capacity; it is not a guarantee that actual demand can never be higher, and a change of use may require reassessment.
