What a gas engineer does
A gas engineer installs, services, repairs and safety-checks gas appliances. This first part of the path looks at the job before any of the theory.
Our gas engineering path is in public beta: some lessons are still being checked. More sections are coming.
Four kinds of visit
Installing puts a new appliance into use; a service is planned care; a repair deals with a fault; a safety check assesses whether an installation is safe. A service and a landlord's safety check are different jobs.
Two common fuels
Mains natural gas is mostly methane. LPG is propane, butane or a mix, stored in cylinders or a bulk tank for homes off the mains. Both need an engineer whose categories cover that fuel and appliance.
Who may do the work
In Great Britain, regulation 3 of the 1998 Regulations says anyone working on a gas fitting must be competent, and gas businesses must belong to the approved class: the Gas Safe Register. Northern Ireland has its own 2004 Regulations with matching duties.
The route in
Training with supervised site work, then ACS assessment, then registration through a gas business. Our lessons cover the knowledge side only and award nothing.
