Notched trowel

A trowel with notches along its edge that combs adhesive into even ridges.

The notch size controls how much adhesive goes down. Bigger tiles and rougher backs need bigger notches. The adhesive maker's data sheet suggests sizes.

Pressing the tile down flattens the ridges into a bed. Lifting one tile now and then shows whether the cover is full.
