Tanking

A waterproof layer put on walls and floors behind the tiles in a shower or wet room.

Tiles shed most water, but grout lets some through. Tanking stops that water reaching the wall or floor behind.

It comes as liquid membranes, sheet membranes or board systems, with tapes for joints and corners. Use one maker's system and follow its instructions.
